Days 2-3: this is usually when swelling and discomfort peak. Ice packs during the first 24-48 hours, then switching to gentle warm compresses afterward, help manage swelling and stiffness. Prescribed or over-the-counter pain medication, taken on schedule rather than waiting for pain to build, tends to keep patients more comfortable through this stretch.

Days 4-7: most patients see noticeable improvement day by day, gradually reintroducing soft foods like scrambled eggs, mashed potatoes, and pasta as comfort allows. Gentle rinsing with warm salt water, started about 24 hours after surgery, helps keep the extraction sites clean.

One to two weeks: most patients are back to their normal diet and activity level, though full healing of the bone and soft tissue continues for several weeks beneath the surface.

When to call our office rather than waiting it out: worsening pain after day 3-4 instead of improving, fever, persistent or heavy bleeding, or a foul taste or odor that could indicate infection or dry socket.

What actually speeds recovery: following post-op instructions precisely, avoiding smoking (which significantly raises dry socket risk), and not skipping prescribed antibiotics if they’re part of your plan.
