• Periodontists focus heavily on the ongoing health of gum tissue and the bone supporting existing teeth — treating gum disease, performing gum grafts, and managing long-term periodontal maintenance
• Oral surgeons handle surgical procedures involving tooth removal, jawbone reconstruction, implant placement, and pathology, along with anesthesia and sedation for more involved procedures

Where cases genuinely need both specialists:

• A patient with advanced periodontal disease who needs extractions and bone grafting from an oral surgeon, followed by long-term periodontal maintenance from a periodontist to protect the results
• Complex implant cases where a periodontist manages soft tissue grafting around the implant site while an oral surgeon handles bone grafting and implant placement
• Patients with a history of gum disease being evaluated for implants, where periodontal health has to be stabilized before surgery can proceed safely
• Ridge augmentation or sinus lift cases where coordinated timing between both specialists produces a better long-term outcome than either working in isolation

Why sequencing matters: doing surgical bone work before periodontal disease is controlled can undermine the results of both procedures. Getting the order and timing right is often the difference between a straightforward case and one that needs to be redone.
