After Implant Placement

What Can I Use For Teeth While The Implants Heal?

We offer a variety of tooth replacement options, customized to meet your specific needs. While your implants heal, you may choose a temporary removable tooth or a temporary bridge to maintain your smile and function. If all of your teeth are missing, we can provide a modified complete denture or a temporary denture to ensure comfort and aesthetics during the healing process.

What Are The Potential Problems?

It’s natural to have concerns about discomfort following an implant procedure, but most patients experience minimal post-operative pain. To ensure a smooth recovery, we prescribe pain medication and antibiotics as needed. In rare cases, a post-operative infection may occur, requiring additional antibiotic treatment.

While we take great care to place implants with precision, there is a small risk of injury to adjacent teeth during the procedure. Additionally, the nerve in the lower jaw, which provides sensation to the lower lip and chin, may be affected if there is significant bone loss. Though we carefully plan to avoid this nerve, minor irritation can sometimes occur, leading to temporary tingling, numbness, or altered sensation in the lip, chin, or tongue. In most cases, these sensations resolve over time, but in rare instances, they may be persistent.

If you experience post-operative numbness, notifying us as soon as possible allows us to provide the most appropriate care and management for your recovery.

How Long Will The Implants Last?

Dental implants are designed to be a long-lasting solution for missing teeth. Studies spanning over 30 years show an 80–90% success rate for patients replacing all their teeth with implants. For those replacing one or several teeth, success rates exceed 95%, making dental implants one of the most reliable restoration options—comparable to medical implants like hip or knee replacements.

In rare cases, an implant may not heal properly or could loosen over time. If this occurs, the implant may need to be removed. After allowing the site to heal—or in some cases, immediately upon removal—a new implant can typically be placed to restore function and aesthetics.

When Are The Replacement Teeth Attached To The Implant?

Your replacement teeth will be securely attached to the implant once your jawbone has fully healed and fused to the implant. This step is performed by your dentist. Our team will carefully assess your progress and discuss the optimal treatment timeline to ensure the best outcome for your specific needs.

How Do I Clean My New Teeth?

Just like natural teeth, implant-supported restorations require regular cleaning with a toothbrush, floss, and any additional hygiene aids recommended by your dentist. Routine dental visits are essential for professional cleanings and maintenance. Over time, implants and their components may experience normal wear and tear, requiring occasional repairs such as clip replacements, relines, screw tightening, or other adjustments.

Will One Doctor Do Everything?

Typically, a dental surgeon will place the implants and perform any necessary surgical procedures, while your general dentist will create and place your temporary and permanent replacement teeth. Both specialists work together to develop a personalized treatment plan that ensures the best possible outcome for your smile.

How Much Does All Of This Cost?

Before beginning treatment, we will provide a detailed estimate of the costs associated with placing your implants and creating your replacement teeth. If multiple specialists are involved in your care, each provider will bill separately for their services.

We are happy to assist you in understanding your insurance benefits and estimating your out-of-pocket costs. However, it’s important to note that some insurance plans offer limited or no coverage for implant procedures. We encourage you to consider your personal financial investment when exploring treatment options.
