Wisdom teeth, also known as third molars, are typically the last teeth to emerge in your mouth. Because they come in last, there often isn’t enough space for them to fit properly, which can lead to overcrowding and impaction (when the teeth cannot fully erupt through the gums). As a result, wisdom teeth may grow in crooked, potentially damaging nearby teeth, nerves, or causing infections. If left untreated, they can lead to more serious complications such as cysts or tumors.
The ideal time for wisdom teeth removal is between the ages of 17 and 25, when the teeth are still developing and their roots are not fully formed. During this time, the procedure carries a lower risk of complications and a quicker recovery.
Oral surgeons are highly trained specialists in wisdom teeth removal. After dental school, we undergo extensive training, including several years of hospital-based education and anesthesia training. This specialized knowledge ensures that your wisdom teeth removal will be safe, comfortable, and positive.
As with any surgery, there are small risks involved. However, complications with wisdom teeth removal are rare and typically minor. Potential risks include infection, dry mouth, and damage to nearby teeth or roots.
You will be fully anesthetized and pain-free during the surgery, and you will be very sleepy throughout the procedure. Once the anesthesia wears off, you may experience some soreness or discomfort, but this is temporary and can be managed with the prescribed pain relief plan. Most patients experience only mild discomfort for a few days as they recover.
