Dental implants have a reputation for being a long, complicated process, but most patients are surprised by how methodical and predictable it actually is once they understand the steps.

1. Consultation and imaging. A 3D cone beam CT scan maps your jawbone volume, density, and the location of nerves and sinuses, letting us plan implant position digitally before any surgery happens.
2. Any necessary preparatory work. Some patients need a bone graft or sinus lift first if there isn’t enough bone volume to support an implant. Others go straight to placement.
3. Implant placement. A titanium (or zirconia) post is placed into the jawbone under local anesthesia or sedation, acting as an artificial tooth root.
4. Osseointegration. Over roughly 3 to 6 months, the bone fuses directly to the implant surface — this biological process is what gives implants their stability and is why the timeline can’t be rushed.
5. Abutment and final restoration. Once integration is confirmed, your restorative dentist places an abutment and a custom crown, bridge, or denture on top of the implant.

How long does it actually take? Straightforward single-tooth cases without grafting can move from placement to final crown in about 3 to 4 months. Cases requiring bone grafting or sinus lifts typically add several months to allow the graft to mature before implant placement.

Why the wait is worth it: implants that are allowed to properly integrate have significantly better long-term success rates than those rushed into early loading. It’s a case where patience genuinely pays off in longevity.
