#Socket Preservation After Tooth Extraction | Falcon Oral Surgery

The moment a tooth is extracted, the surrounding bone begins to change. Without the stimulation a tooth root normally provides, the jawbone in that area starts to resorb — and a meaningful portion of that bone loss happens within the first several months. Socket preservation is a simple, often same-visit procedure designed to slow that process down.

What happens to an extraction site without preservation: the socket can lose significant width and height as it heals, sometimes complicating or ruling out implant placement down the road without a separate, more involved bone grafting procedure later.

What socket preservation actually involves: immediately after extraction, bone grafting material is placed directly into the empty socket, often covered with a collagen membrane to hold it in place while the site heals. Rather than the socket healing into a resorbed, collapsed space, it heals around a scaffold that helps maintain the site’s original volume.

Who should consider it:

  • Anyone planning a future implant in that location, even if the implant itself is months or years away
  • Patients extracting a visible front tooth, where preserving bone and gum contour matters significantly for the future cosmetic outcome
  • Cases with thin bone walls at the extraction site already, where resorption would be more pronounced without intervention
  • Patients not yet sure whether they’ll want an implant, bridge, or partial denture later — preserving bone keeps all of those options genuinely open

Who might reasonably skip it: patients who know for certain they won’t be replacing the tooth, or replacing it with a removable denture where bone volume is less critical to the outcome.

The bigger picture: socket preservation typically adds only a few minutes to the extraction appointment and modestly to the cost, but it can be the difference between a straightforward implant placement later and needing a separate ridge augmentation procedure to rebuild bone that didn’t need to be lost in the first place.

If you have an extraction coming up and there’s any chance you’ll want to replace that tooth down the road, ask our oral surgeons at Falcon Implants & Oral Surgery about socket preservation before the appointment, not after.
