There are several reasons why you and your dentist may decide that a tooth extraction is necessary. Some teeth may be extracted due to severe decay, while others may have advanced periodontal disease or be broken beyond repair. Additionally, teeth may need to be removed if they are poorly positioned, such as impacted teeth, or as part of the preparation for orthodontic treatment.
To ensure your comfort during the extraction, the doctor will begin by numbing the area around the tooth, including the tooth itself, jawbone, and surrounding gums, using a local anesthetic.
As the tooth is being removed, you may feel some pressure. This pressure is caused by the tooth being gently rocked back and forth to widen the socket for extraction. While you will feel pressure, you should not experience pain because the anesthetic blocks the nerves responsible for transmitting pain, though the nerves responsible for pressure sensation may still be active.
If at any point you experience pain during the procedure, please inform us immediately so we can address it promptly.
In certain cases, a tooth may need to be sectioned for removal. This is a common procedure performed when a tooth is deeply rooted or when the root is curved, making it difficult for the socket to expand enough for extraction. During this process, the doctor carefully divides the tooth into smaller sections and removes each piece individually, ensuring a safe and efficient extraction.
