Oral Pathology

The inside of your mouth is lined with a smooth, coral pink tissue known as mucosa. Any changes to this appearance can be a sign of a potential pathological issue, with oral cancer being one of the most serious concerns. Some early signs of a pathological process or cancerous growth to watch for include:

  • Reddish (erythroplasia) or whitish (leukoplakia) patches in the mouth

  • A sore that does not heal and bleeds easily

  • A lump or thickening in the lining of the mouth

  • Persistent sore throat, hoarseness, or difficulty chewing or swallowing

These changes may occur on the lips, cheeks, palate, gum tissue around the teeth, tongue, face, and/or neck. While pain is not always present with oral pathology—and is rarely associated with oral cancer—it is important to note that unexplained facial or oral pain could be a risk factor.

We recommend performing a monthly self-examination for oral cancer. Your mouth can serve as a vital warning system for your body. If you notice any suspicious lumps, sores, or changes, do not ignore them. Contact us for assistance with any concerns or questions you may have.
